Spring is in the air and the stars of the turf are converging on Melbourne to compete for millions of dollars in prize money. The winners will also earn themselves the right to an illustrious stud career to produce the next batch of superstars with the gelding's wondering what might of been.
While we wait for our two youngsters Donald and Wayne (shares still available see new arrivals on the racing page), to mature into future spring West Aussie Raiders, Lucky Duck Racing has looked at a few futures markets where we can hopefully get some overs and big priced multi's up and running for the carnival.
Scales of Justice $7.50 & $8.50; WAstar who's first run in Melbourne was phenomenal. Running around like a drunk down the unsuitable Flemington 1200m Straight, it had the audacity to still run a clear 2nd and would of finished close to track and distance specialist Redkirk Warrior. Definitely targeting these two races over the ideal 1400 and 1600m around a bend at Caufield while other's in the market like Brave Smash (Everest) unlikely to run hence will shorten further.
Caufield Guineas (14/10)
Royal Symphony $3; With Menari not targeting this stallion making 3yo mile feature, Royal Symphony stands out at the top of the markets like a beacon. Unbeaten including a miraculous win first up where it was buried on the fence near last before weaving through gaps and exploding late, giving punters a heart attack in the process. No need to dive into the $3 this early but good multi banker.
Thousand Guineas( 14/10)
Shoals $9 ; Guineas for the fillies sees the unbeaten daughter of Fastnet Rock on the third line of betting. Has won on heavy and good tracks, always handy when betting on futures and has beaten very promising Sydney filly Formality which has franked this form recently.
Caufield Cup (21/10)
This market will fluctuate wildly in the coming weeks when a horse runs a slasher in a lead up, others fail or head elsewhere. Each week will see a dramatic shortener with last weeks hero already forgotten. The best value is those that are yet to produce the odds shortening run, the trick is knowing when that is. The leading chances look to be.
Humidor $5.50; New favourite after smashing previous favourite Hartnell last weekend at WFA. Still improving with experience, in power stable and ticks all the boxes but no value in betting early.
Almandin $8.50; Reigning Melbourne cup champion that has been dominant in every staying race in Australia it has contested. This year there is no Melbourne Cup weight penalty for the winner hence I'm sure connections will be chasing the big purse on their way to the title defence at Flemington.
Gingernuts $19; NZ Derby winner who was early favourite here since markets opened. Has done nothing wrong either and worth a nibble before it starts in Australia before it reminds aussies how talented he is.
Francis of Assisi $21; International Godolphin runner that came over last spring as a travelling companion for it's more credentialled runners and left with the Bendigo Cup and a ten length romp in the 2600m Queen Elizabeth. Probably more suited to Melbourne Cup distance at this level but it Obviously likes Australia which is of most importance with the International raiders and can't be ruled out.
Cox Plate 28/10
Winx $1.60; If I have to write about Winx you have been living under a rock for two years. Going for her 3rd Cox Plate in a row and currently sitting on 20 straight wins she only has to stay fit and healthy to bank a multi leg.
Victorian Derby 4/11
Sully $21 ; One of the trickiest markets as many of them won't end up running and they haven't been tried over a distance yet. Sully has an ex factor about him. Bred in NZ like most of our top young stayers he is as green as grass but still winning. If he can learn some manners quick smart he might prove to be the one to beat.
Melbourne Cup 7/11
Almandin $6; See Caufield Cup too short to back early
Francis Of Assisi $21; See Caufield Cup , my top pick value wise.
Gingernuts $31; See Caufield Cup, like more for Caufield but horses that run well there usually in the mix here.
Multi 1 Scales of Justice (Rupert), Royal Symphony , Winx $36 ; This is my base multi involving my top three confidence wise. I am then combining a few others separately.
