While the Group 2 Status is very debatable and the decision to run it away from New Years Day has most likely ruined the party atmosphere on course, it is still our oldest race and a cup that would look good in any trophy cabinet. Not to mention 500k in stakes which is awesome money for this calibre of field.
This years race looks very wide open with the majority of the field on the minimum under handicap conditions. Here are our selections;
13. Prying Tom; Simply trying to find some value outside the favourite has led me here. His dad (pictured above) won a Perth Cup and his run under totally unsuitable WFA conditions in the Kingston Town was a cracker. Back to the minimum from a soft draw, can run a each way race at $19.
3. Action; The fact he is $2.25 shows how weak the field is. The price has a big “Pike Tax” on it however I understand why bookies are reluctant to take him on. Dominant Derby winner over this distance he is obviously looking for it. Will get back and WA races rarely run to suit him but if he gets the breaks can easily finish over the top.
10. Mississippi Delta; Has a very solid record and if Pike had of chose her most likely would of started favourite. Drawn to get gun run and hard to see her not fighting out the finish.
8. Khartoum; Lone eastern states runner who is locally owned/bred. A couple of bm78 victories shouldn’t be good enough in a 500k cup but it is this year, especially Victorian 78’s.
Best Roughy;
2. Star Exhibit; One start at this track and distance for win in this race two years ago and from the right stable.
