It’s no secret our WFA middle distance horses have struggled to make a statement so far this spring. This can also be put partly down to Winx. Over the last four years, owners of gun 3yo’s have had to decide between taking on Winx and putting a dent in their stud value or retiring early. This happens regardless but the presence of the mighty mare escalated things. Would love to see horses such as The Autumn Sun here but it is what it is. This years race pits a wonderful Japanese mare in LYS GRACIEUX vs a host of Europeans with ridiculous strong form lines behind some of the best horses in the world.
1st . (9) LYS GRACIEUX; Jockey Damian Lane’s trip to Japan earlier this year has already bagged him last weeks Caulfield Cup and sets to pay even bigger dividends here. She is a duel group 1 winner in Japan which is panels above what the Australian horses have managed and her record stacks up against the very best. Can do work from her wide gate early and still run home in fast time as she did at her last start. Reported to have settled in very well.
2nd. (10) Magic Wand; Has only won 2 from 18 but has finished runner up behind Magical who is a world class mare who has tested the champion mare Enable. Has competed against the best stayers in the world her whole career.
3rd. (8) Danceteria; The gelding operation has worked wonders with this fellow. Two starts ago ran a fast finishing 4th behind Enable , then won a German group 1. Another one who has been racing against far superior animals than the locals.
4th. (3) Kluger ; Was the only runner to get near Winx in the Queen Elizabeth in the Autumn. Is a couple of lengths below compatriot LYS GRACIEUX but if she doesn’t perform up to expectations then he has to be in the mix.
The task looks too big for the aussie brigade , headed by Mystic Journey. She can definitely run a race however I feel the Internationals will be too strong late.
